Fishing is perhaps the most confusing skill to start, so hopefully this will ease your journey a bit!

How to Fish

You will need your fishing tool, your fishing rod. There are currently only two rods available to be crafted and here are their recipes:

  • Crude Fishing Rod - No Level Required, 1 Bone, 1 Rope, 1 Stick
  • Iron Fishing Rod - Level 25 Fishing, 3 Bone, 2 Iron Ingots, 1 Thread. You will also need a hammer and saw and to be near an anvil to craft.

Now that you have your rod, you will need bait. There are currently four types of bait which are: worms, whitebait, dough, and butterfly wings. (currently testing number of fishes caught to confirm differences between baits with a sample size of 100 baits of each type.) It is currently suggested to use only worms and whitebait. Being brand new to fishing, you will only be concerned with using worms.

You can get worms by digging with a shovel in dirt until it becomes dark soil and continue digging. You will be digging up soil as well as worms. You can rinse the soil by being near a water container (ie a barrel) or holding a water vessel (a mug or flask). Be careful rinsing soil, there is a very small chance it will give you plague. You can wear plague doctor robes as you clean or have a plague pot nearby.

Now that you have your first bait, lets get to fishing!

Equip your fishing rod onto either hand, then right click on it and select open and place your bait in it.

To fish you need to cast your line in deep water, which is dark water, that's normally around lakes and some ponds. You'll hit spacebar to cast and start the fight.

Once you cast a confusing window will emerge. It will have two numbers, one with a fish on top, and one with a fishing rod. Your job is to try to match those numbers as best you can. The arrows indicate how fast you want to move your rod (or numbers). How much your rod with each move depends on your fishing level*

These are roughly:

</> ~ 20

<</>> ~ 50

<<</>>> ~ 75

Yay! You caught your first fish :D

It may have been a whitebait, and if it is then you can use that again as bait too :)
